Palm Beach County Mr. Williams was convicted of firing a gun into the air after a verbal exchange with four men walking from their car to their apartment. He was sentenced to 80 years in prison, based on 20 years for each of four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. The trial court ruled the sentences had to run consecutively under Florida’s 10-20-Life law. The Fourth District Court of Appeal upheld the sentence but also certified the issue as one of great public importance for this Court’s review.
