On January 30, 1986, 11-year-old Staci Lynn Jazvac failed to return home after traveling by bicycle to purchase posterboard at a nearby store. She was later found dead. Rivera was arrested, tried, and convicted, and sentenced to death. The sentence was upheld on appeal. Rivera now challenges the validity of his death sentence.
