On the Trail: The 2006 Florida Cattle Drive


In 1995, about 700 people celebrated Florida's 150 years of statehood by leading cattle on a 70 mile old fashioned cattle drive. And in 2006, history repeated itself on a much shorter path. It was a cattle drive winding through Florida ranches that face extinction because of development. The Florida Crossroads team goes On the Trail for the 2006 Florida Cattle Drive.

We the People 2006, Part 2: Proposed Constitutional Amendments on the November Ballot


An increase in the homestead exemption, a discount for veterans on ad valorem taxes and putting Florida's eminent domain law in the state constitution - those were three of the six proposed constitutional amendments Floridians had a chance to vote on in November of 2006. The Florida Channel team examined the amendments in the second half of the series, We the People 2006.

In November of 2006, Florida voters decided whether or not to add six amendments to the state constitution. Those decisions affected the state budget, specified how much the state spends on tobacco prevention and determined how proposed constitutional amendments get on the ballot in the first place. In this documentary, national and state leaders weigh in on the class size debate, while at the local level, school administrators continually recruit new teachers, build more schools and search for innovative ways to meet the voter mandated class size requirements. Despite all the complex calculations, some are questioning if there are enough resources available to successfully meet the demands of the not too distant future.
