Part of the mission of PBS, PBS KIDS, NPR, and CPB (Corporation of Public Broadcasting) is,<\/p>\n
\u201cTo ensure universal access to non-commercial, high-quality content, free of charge, by supporting local public television and radio stations in rural, small-town, and urban communities across the country. Furthermore, CPB has a special responsibility to develop content that addresses the needs of underserved and unserved audiences, particularly children and minorities.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are general degree and certification requirements and professional certificates in specific subjects. Some subjects require additional endorsements, such as Athletic Coaching, English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Gifted, and Reading. Here in Florida, a teacher must renew their Professional Educator\u2019s Certificate<\/a> every five years to keep it valid by:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n To keep certification up-to-date, teachers must also attend specific training sessions. Sessions are specific to new curricula and materials, adherence to new legislation regarding teachers, and teacher conferences. Sometimes teachers must pay fees associated with ongoing professional development requirements.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The WFSU Education team offers many services related to maintaining teaching requirements free of charge. Here are some ways our team helps teachers manage their load.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n WFSU Offers a 5-part, 15-hour PD series for PreK-5 Educators<\/strong><\/p>\n This series is part of our Ready To Learn (RTL) Grant work, which teaches facilitators best practices for leading RTL Family and Community Learning Workshops.<\/p>\n During PBS Edcamp, PBS member stations (like WFSU) brought together teachers in communities to elevate their voices and empower them professionally.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Each month, local teachers, parents, and caregivers come to our Educator Workshops.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Local teachers learn about strategies, resources, and lesson ideas from experienced teachers and community organizations. In addition, they earn 2 hours of in-service credit that can be utilized toward certification.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Pro-Tips For PD Success<\/p>\n In an Education Week article, \u201cWhat Works\u2014and What Doesn\u2019t\u2014in Teacher PD\u201d<\/a>, Madeline Will shares a new research paper that examines what works in the professional development field. She lists five critical areas for what works best, and we agree! These include\u2026<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cIdentifying key teaching strategies and providing support for carrying out those changes in the classroom\u2014was found to be more effective for improving student outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cEmphasize more general principals to promote broader and more lasting changes in instruction, but leave it up to the teachers to integrate those changes in their existing lessons, materials, and assessments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cResearch has shown that strong teacher-student relationships can lead to higher student academic engagement, better attendance, grades, fewer disruptive behaviors, suspensions, and lower school dropout rates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cCoaching can include modeling instruction, co-planning lessons, direct feedback, and other consultations and support.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cTeachers can share their experiences implementing the practices learned and receive feedback from colleagues and program facilitators.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n If you are a teacher who needs an opportunity to fulfill your recertification or, maybe, some inspiration for your instruction, the WFSU Education Team can help!
