On July 7, 1988, Tallahassee Police Officer Ernest Ponce de Leon was shot and killed while trying to apprehend escapees from a Maryland prison, including Jones. At trial, Jones was tried and convicted. The jury recommended the death penalty 11-to-1, which the judge imposed. His sentence was affirmed on appeal. He now challenges the validity of his sentence.
