Hall was convicted and sentenced to death for the February 1978 murders of Karol Hurst in Leesburg and of Deputy Sheriff Lonnie Coburn in Hernando County. Hurst's body was found in Sumter County. His sentence was upheld on appeal, but he now challenges its validity in part on grounds he is mentally retarded.
