On Thanksgiving 1994 the body of Ann Powell was found in the trunk of her burned-out car in a field near the Pinellas County Trail. Carpenter was arrested for the crime, tried, and convicted. The jury recommended capital punishment 7-to-5, and the judge sentenced him to death.
