The author of it is Mary Simpson Brown Archer. &nbsp;Mary kept recipes, cleaning tips, and more in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamemory.com\/items\/show\/343348\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.floridamemory.com\/items\/show\/343348\">notebook <\/a>that today provides us and historians with a small window into the daily life of Tallahasseans from the Antebellum to the Reconstruction eras. (Image created by Adobe Firefly Generative AI Program)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mary-simpson-brown-archer\"><strong><a href=\"#mary-simpson-brown-archer\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#mary-simpson-brown-archer\">Who was Mary Simpson Brown Archer?<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary Simpson Brown Archer was born in Virginia on December 21, 1821.&nbsp; Her parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Brown, moved their family and 140 enslaved people to Florida Territory when Mary was around seven years old.&nbsp; One of seven children, Mary grew up in Tallahassee where her father built a large hotel called Brown\u2019s Inn.&nbsp; In 1849, <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.fl.gov\/florida-facts\/florida-history\/florida-governors\/thomas-brown\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/dos.fl.gov\/florida-facts\/florida-history\/florida-governors\/thomas-brown\/\">Thomas Brown<\/a> was elected the second governor of the new state of Florida. (State Archives of Florida)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The couple had two children: Thomas in 1849 and Susan in 1850. &nbsp;Mary\u2019s husband James <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/10126014\/james-tillinghast-archer\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/10126014\/james-tillinghast-archer\">died just a few years later<\/a> in 1859 at the age of 40. &nbsp;The family strongly supported the Confederacy before, during, and after the Civil War.&nbsp; In addition to her father and husband owning enslaved people, Mary\u2019s son was one of the West Florida Seminar cadets who fought for the Confederacy at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/local-routes-reenacting-history-battle-natural-bridge\/\">Battle of Natural Bridge south of Tallahassee in 1865.<\/a> Furthermore, at the request of her brother-in-law, Mary hid all of Florida\u2019s Confederate Battle Flags at the war\u2019s end so they would not fall into the hands of the Union Troops occupying Tallahassee. However, the family must have still owned her father\u2019s Inn. After his death, Mary took over the operation of it in 1870. (State Archives of Florida\/Archer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mary Archer\u2019s Recipe Notebook<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/9044208\/thomas-brown-archer\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/9044208\/thomas-brown-archer\">Mary\u2019s son and his wife <\/a><\/em>died young with no children.&nbsp; Meanwhile, Mary\u2019s daughter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/138404516\/susan-matilda-archer\">lived to be 82<\/a>, but never married.&nbsp; At some point, Mary Simpson Brown Archer\u2019s notebook with the handwritten recipes was donated to the State Library and Archives of Florida. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamemory.com\/items\/show\/343348\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.floridamemory.com\/items\/show\/343348\">The entire notebook is online<\/a>, and you can read it for yourself.&nbsp;At two points in the book, dates are mentioned. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamemory.com\/items\/show\/343348?id=2\">The first is &#8220;1852,<\/a>&#8221; when Mary wrote her name multiple times in the front of the book. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamemory.com\/items\/show\/343348?id=16\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.floridamemory.com\/items\/show\/343348?id=16\">The other is &#8220;1869&#8221;,<\/a> when Mary&#8217;s 20-year-old son practiced his penmanship. Sure, there were stoves and ovens in the mid-1800s, but a wood- or coal-heated oven does not exactly have the same type of capability as a modern electric or gas oven that will efficiently preheat to exactly 350 degrees. In some older recipes I\u2019ve run across while researching for this project, I\u2019ve seen phrases like \u201cslow oven\u201d and \u201cfast oven\u201d which I take to mean \u201clow temperature\u201d and \u201chigh temperature.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In families that have passed down recipes like this, they are often modified over the generations to deal with the changing technology. Sometimes, they are rewritten, and sometimes there are just notes in the margins. Leave the others in the fridge until you are ready for it because as it warms up it will become harder to handle. Flour a rolling pin and roll out the dough until it\u2019s about \u00bc inch thick.&nbsp; Make sure the dough is as even as possible.&nbsp;   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can use a round cookie cutter to cut out the tea cakes in the traditional style.&nbsp; I used a 2-inch round cutter.&nbsp; Beth McGrotha has also done them with an adorable Florida cookie cutter that turned out great! All are delicious!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes until the edges are golden brown. (The bigger and thicker the cookie, the longer it will take. You can leave them round or slightly flatten them. With each one, we plan to share some of the local history surrounding the people who created and handed down the recipes over the decades and sometimes centuries. She is a past chair of the National Educational Telecommunications Association\u2019s Content Peer Learning Community and a member of Public Media Women in Leadership organization.
