Here, we learn the story of Bruce Means&#8217;s first salamander discovery.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Is there something you love doing enough to do it for over fifty years?&nbsp; Some do, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m here today. &nbsp;I\u2019m following Bruce Means into a titi swamp in the Bradwell Bay Wilderness.&nbsp; He\u2019d scour this place as a&nbsp;Florida State University graduate student in the 1960s, and today we\u2019re&nbsp;on the same mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re on the hunt for southern dusky salamanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the middle of the summer, and it\u2019s been a rainy one. &nbsp;There\u2019s &nbsp;water on the ground, unlike&nbsp;when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wfsu.org\/blog-coastal-health\/?p=10063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we hiked out here last December with Dr. Means\u2019s son, Ryan, and his family<\/a>. &nbsp;It\u2019s a little higher than Dr. Means likes for salamander searching. &nbsp;He works the edge of the water with a dip net, raising a scoop of leaves to his face and picking through it. &nbsp;No luck so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The yellow flies are biting, but it\u2019s not as bad as in other years, Dr. Means says. &nbsp;We haven\u2019t followed the Florida National Scenic Trail into the heart of the swamp, where the old, big trees are.&nbsp; We followed it to where the pine flatwoods transition to wetland, splashing under a canopy of black and red titi. &nbsp;Then Dr. Means took us off trail, which, when flooded, looks the same as the trail. &nbsp;I can see why there are so many stories of people getting lost here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wfsu.org\/blog-coastal-health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5361-small.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wfsu.org\/blog-coastal-health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5361-small-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"Titi swamp in the Bradwell Bay Wilderness Area, Apalachicola National Forest.
