Here, we find a pocket of ice age Florida.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re standing at one of the places I most love in this world,\u201d Bruce Means tells the camera.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cThere\u2019s a big surprise right behind me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr.&nbsp;Means&nbsp;stands in an open field, a row of oak trees a short distance away. &nbsp;When we get to the tree line, we look down. &nbsp;Up here, all we see are the tops of trees and a slope that descends into shadows.&nbsp; At the bottoms of those trees, however, lies the promise of&nbsp;rare plants and animals, a few of which aren\u2019t found anywhere but the Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines region. &nbsp;This is a steephead ravine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wfsu.org\/blog-coastal-health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/slope-down-small.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wfsu.org\/blog-coastal-health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/slope-down-small-1024x701.jpg\" alt=\"Looking down into a steephead ravine, all we see are the tops of trees.\" class=\"wp-image-10678\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re here in search of the Apalachicola dusky salamander. &nbsp;It\u2019s a critter Dr. Means discovered as a graduate student at Florida State University in the 1960s and 70s. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wfsu.org\/blog-coastal-health\/?p=10620\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">He was researching&nbsp;the southern dusky salamander<\/a>, and exploring&nbsp;Florida wetlands to&nbsp;get a sense of all the places they\u2019d be found. &nbsp;That search led him down steephead ravines, which had been largely ignored by biologists to that point. &nbsp;The dusky salamanders he found there were, at the time, classified as southern duskies.<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wfsu.org\/blog-coastal-health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Apalachicola-Dusky3-cropped.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Apalachicola-Dusky3-cropped-1024x848.jpg\" alt=\"A close up of an animal\" class=\"wp-image-11383\" width=\"256\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Apalachicola-Dusky3-cropped-1024x848.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Apalachicola-Dusky3-cropped-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Apalachicola-Dusky3-cropped-768x636.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Apalachicola-Dusky3-cropped-696x577.jpg 696w, https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Apalachicola-Dusky3-cropped-1068x885.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Apalachicola-Dusky3-cropped-507x420.jpg 507w, https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Apalachicola-Dusky3-cropped.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><figcaption>The Apalachicola dusky salamander (Desmognathus apalachicolae)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It turned out to be a separate species, which he named in 1972-&nbsp;<em>Desmognathus apalachicolae<\/em>, the Apalachicola dusky salamander. &nbsp;In his quest to learn more about these salamanders, he found a habitat like no other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-75\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.wfsu.org\/blog-coastal-health\/2017\/11\/steephead-salamander-search-apalachicolas-ice-age-refugees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Discover more about the Apalachicola dusky salamander by clicking here to read Rob&#8217;s ecology blog post.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Originally Published: November 16, 2017 In a steephead ravine by the Apalachicola River, we look for the Apalachicola dusky salamander with Bruce Means.
