{"id":301,"date":"2016-11-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes-2\/?article=the-veterans-story-from-the-great-florida-cattle-d"},"modified":"2019-09-26T14:02:49","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T18:02:49","slug":"the-veterans-story-from-the-great-florida-cattle-d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/2016-11-11\/the-veterans-story-from-the-great-florida-cattle-d\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The Veterans Story&#8221; From The Great Florida Cattle Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cThe Veteran Story\u201d is about a group of combat-wounded veterans who took part in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatfloridacattledrive16.org\/\">Great Florida Cattle Drive 2016.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That historical event took place in central Florida with over 400 riders and around 500 head of cattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis ride is a re-enactment of the cattle drive done back in the 1800s,\u201d said Imogene Yarborough, a Rancher and Committee member for the Drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Produced by award-winning film makers, Elam and Nic Stolzfus, this 11 minute video about the Veterans is a short preview of a longer documentary on the cattle drive called \u201cThe Great Florida Cattle Drive: Unbroken Circles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UZhkWCxFjzA\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the segment you see here, the Veterans share how they connected with the land, their horses, and other riders on the trail.&nbsp; And they did it as rain poured down on them for a good portion of the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chair for the Cattle Drive Committee, Doyle Conner Junior, says the weather is always part of a cattle drive experience.&nbsp; \u201cWhen people first called in and said, \u2018Well, Mr. Conner, what are we going to do if the weather is bad?\u2019 I said, \u2018What you\u2019re going to do is remember it longer.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.freshfromflorida.com\/Divisions-Offices\/Florida-Forest-Service\/Recreation\/Operation-Outdoor-Freedom\">Operation Outdoor Freedom<\/a> helped provide the opportunity for veterans to take part in the cattle drive free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe transformation I saw in myself\u2026 It was incredible,\u201d said Chris Dacy, Alumni Manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woundedwarriorproject.org\/\">Wounded Warrior Project<\/a>. &nbsp;\u201cIt was an incredible time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They weren\u2019t the only ones affected by the experience.&nbsp; During the drive, the veterans mentored a group of young men from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsheriffs.org\/law-enforcement-programs\/our-programs\/youth\/florida-sheriffs-youth-ranch\">Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeff Parker, Farm Manager for the Youth Ranches says activities like this can be a life-changing experience for the boys. \u201cIt can totally change their outlook,\u201d he said. \u201cIt can change their personalities, it can give them something else that they never imagined doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of a week, the Veterans, the young men from the Ranch, and the other participants on the drive, bonded together to form an unbroken circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were all one big group, and I loved that.\u201d said Dacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full documentary is scheduled to premiere on WFSU-TV and other PBS stations across Florida in February of 2017.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe Veteran Story\u201d is about a group of combat-wounded veterans who took part in the Great Florida Cattle Drive 2016.
