Brian Laidlaw, the wing\u2019s commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year ago, Hurricane Michael steamrolled through the Florida Panhandle destroying nearly everything in its path. Heavily damaged was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tyndall.af.mil\/\">Tyndall Air Force Base<\/a> in Bay County, home to the 325<sup>th<\/sup> Fighter Wing &#8211; the largest F-22 Fighter Wing in the Air Force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the storm made landfall the base lost all\ncommunications. After hours of howling winds, heavy rains, and roofs ripped off\nbuildings, Laidlaw and the 93 airmen on the base stepped outside:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn this case here when we walked out during the eye we knew\nthat this was the big storm,\u201d he recounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large\"><p> \u201cWe are effectively starting from scratch&#8230;\u201d  <\/p><cite>Col. Brian Laidlaw, Tyndall AFB<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The storm caused massive damage. It tore through buildings,\nsent machines flying and destroyed more than half the base\u2019s buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are effectively starting from scratch,\u201d There certainly\nare some buildings that have stayed that were not damaged significantly that\nwe\u2019re doing some permanent repairs to,\u201d said Brig. Gen. Patrice Melancon. \u201cBut\nby and large we\u2019ve taken this opportunity to really look at the layout of the\nbase.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal estimates put Tyndall\u2019s rebuild cost at $4.25 billion, Congress has approved $3 billion. Photo Taken October 7, 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Damage and Recovery at Naval Support Activity in Panama City<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Twelve miles to the west from Tyndall is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnic.navy.mil\/regions\/cnrse\/installations\/nsa_panama_city.html\">Naval Support Activity base in Panama City<\/a>. It was on the weaker side of the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithin three weeks following the storm\u2026 we were able to\nbring housing residents back in,\u201d said Ed Buczeck the Public Affairs Expert for\nthe base. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says unlike Tyndall they aren\u2019t doing a full rebuild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo what we\u2019re looking at here at Panama City is not the\nbase of the future but to what we were on October 10<sup>th<\/sup>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buczeck says the estimated damage is $182 million, so far\nthey\u2019ve received $73.5 million. He believes it will take four years to complete\nthe repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, both bases are fully functional.
