{"id":5665,"date":"2019-12-19T19:19:38","date_gmt":"2019-12-20T00:19:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes-2\/?post=are-sinkholes-making-lakes-at-fred-george-basin-gr"},"modified":"2019-12-19T19:33:09","modified_gmt":"2019-12-20T00:33:09","slug":"are-sinkholes-making-lakes-at-fred-george-basin-gr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/2019-12-19\/are-sinkholes-making-lakes-at-fred-george-basin-gr\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Sinkholes Making Lakes at Fred George Basin Greenway?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At Fred George Basin Greenway, geologist Harley Means takes us to two sinkholes that may one day become one of the Red Hills\u2019 sinkhole lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m off trail, following Harley Means into a hole in the ground.\u00a0 Maybe not so much a hole as a depression.\u00a0 Once at the bottom of this unremarkable looking bowl, we do something I love to do on the Ecology Blog: a little bit of time traveling.\u00a0 It\u2019s the kind of thing we\u2019d normally need a little bit of imagination to do.\u00a0 Or a larger graphics budget.\u00a0 This time, though, Harley and I have already visited the future of this place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re standing in what may, one day, become one of Tallahassee\u2019s sinkhole lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of two adjacent sinkholes on the Fred George Basin Greenway.\u00a0 Opening in 2016, the Greenway is one of our newer public spaces.\u00a0 A major reason that Blueprint 2000 sought to buy the land is to protect these gateways to the Floridan Aquifer, the source of our drinking water.\u00a0 Dye traces have shown that water flowing into the larger sinkhole will emerge in two different City of Tallahassee water wells.\u00a0 The surrounding floodplain forest is now protected as a filter for that water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:left\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wfsu.org\/blog-coastal-health\/?p=13287\"><em>Discover more about the science and behind-the-scenes EcoAdventures of the Fred George Basin Greenway with WFSU&#8217;s Rob Diaz de Villegas by clicking here or heading to the wfsu.org\/ecologyblog to read the full article.<\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At Fred George Basin Greenway, geologist Harley Means takes us to two sinkholes that may one day become one of the Red Hills\u2019 sinkhole lakes.
