Although new supplies are moving into area stores, there is still a shortage of infant formula facing new parents in the Tallahassee region. But there are some alternatives to help the situation.<\/p>\n

Chris Szorcsik with Capital Area Healthy Start said the good news is that things could have been much worse locally.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur local community hasn\u2019t had as severe a supply chain issue, not as severe as some of the other locations are experiencing. But we no it\u2019s challenging, it\u2019s scary and uncertain for families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Szorcsik said there is some infant formula to be had from Second Harvest of the Big Bend, Echo, the WIC offices in Leon and Wakulla counties. There is also a local Facebook site where families can share formula availability information. But she cautioned there is also some misinformation online.<\/p>\n

(UPDATE as of 3 p.m., June 2 – Second Harvest of the Big Bend CEO Monique Van Pelt sent an email to WFSU stating that her organization did not currently have infant formula available.)<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of homemade recipes floating around out there right now, but they lack adequate amounts of critical nutrients for babies. The best thing really is to try and find a substitute and once again, if you\u2019re struggling to find that substitute, talk to your doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n

And for parents who do find formula, Szorcsik said it should never be watered down to conserve the supply. <\/p>\n
