The covered delivery area of the Northwest Lowes store in Tallahassee resembled an industrial assembly line Saturday, Sept. 10. It was the revived effort by the group Sleep in Heavenly Peace<\/a> to build bunk beds for local kids who have no beds of their own.<\/p>\n

Sleep in Heavenly Peace local President John Cousins was showing how the more-than-one hundred volunteers build sturdy bunk beds from raw lumber.<\/p>\n

“It all gets marked,” he explained, indicating pieces of pine, ready for processing. “Then it goes to two workstations.”<\/p>\n

He said Saturday’s session was on track to produce 20 beds, with accommodations for 40 sleepy kids.<\/p>\n

“Most of these beds are going to Leon County and will be delivered this week.”<\/p>\n

The next bed build, he said, will happen the first weekend of October at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church near Lake Ella.<\/p>\n

“We will be building our 1,000th bunk bed! That’s 2,000 kids off the floor in 3 and a half years.”<\/p>\n

Cousins said that puts the Capital City in the top 10 producers of beds nationwide, all provided free to the families that need them most. <\/p>\n
