One of the most popular offerings of Leon County’s library system is the yearly garden seed giveaway. The kickoff for this year’s distribution brought hundreds of people to the library’s main branch in downtown Tallahassee on Saturday.<\/p>\n

This year, lots of information booths were set up on both floors of the library. County Extension Service Agent Mark Tancig showed off a small “garden in a box,” perfect for apartment dwellers or anyone without a large yard.<\/p>\n

“We have this small demonstration raised bed that will really fit anywhere. If you have a small spot, 6 by 6 wide that gets some sun, you can grow a little bit of something,” he smiled.<\/p>\n

And it wasn’t all about vegetables and herbs. Marina Mertz with the Florida Wildflower Foundation urged the planting of native wildflowers.<\/p>\n

“If you like to watch birds and butterflies, what you need for that is the bottom of the food chain, the flowers.”<\/p>\n

Library System Director Pamela Monroe said there are still lots of free seeds to be had.<\/p>\n

“You can check out seeds from any of our branches as well as the main library for the rest of the month through March until all of the seeds are gone.”<\/p>\n

The library also loans out gardening tools to its patrons free of charge. <\/p>\n
