Last week the Kearney Center endured a series of leaks that shut down the homeless shelter\u2019s kitchen and hot water for days. The community\u2019s response was a message to the people who live there.<\/p>\n

Vicki Butler, the Kearney Center\u2019s director of operations, was still finding new leaks when she got the first call. Second Harvest of the Big Bend had heard about the fiasco and was sending water. And then the community found out what was happening and began to bring water, meals \u2013 everything they needed.<\/p>\n

Butler says that was a crucial message to people who often feel they\u2019re perceived in a negative way.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so, they\u2019re used to trying just to stay safe or away from other people in the community,” she said. “So, when the community comes here and they\u2019re treated with dignity and respect, and they\u2019re treated with love and care and healing, then they go, \u2018Okay, the community hasn\u2019t given up on me.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last year, more than half a million people experienced homelessness across the United States. Tallahassee\u2019s numbers more than doubled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe even had the FSU football team in here a couple of weeks ago,\u201d Butler said. \u201cAnd they were very engaged. It was really cool. Coach Sue swung by here not too long ago. My staff was starstruck. \u2018That\u2019s Coach Sue!\u2019 And so, she\u2019s a fantastic advocate for us. Hats off to her \u2013 super-appreciative.\u201d<\/p>\n

The leaks have been fixed but Butler says help from volunteers is always welcome.<\/p>\n
