The cycling community gathered Thursday to celebrate the life of Jake Boykin, who was killed in a hit-and-run last week while training for a competition. His grieving family and friends say they have unfinished business \u2013 making sure Boykin\u2019s life was not in vain.<\/p>\n

They called the memorial \u201cChampion\u2019s Sendoff,\u201d and Boykin was a champion. He was a 25-year-old doctoral student at Florida State University who had won the national collegiate time trial. His friend Jason Khan-Hohensee spoke to the bikers before they set off from the Chaires Community Center on a ride in Boykin\u2019s honor.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to mobilize, we\u2019re going to make sure Jake\u2019s death was not in vain,” he said. “We\u2019re going to get to that. But right now, tonight, it\u2019s about celebrating Jake\u2019s life. So, let\u2019s do that as best we can. Let\u2019s get out there, let\u2019s ride some bikes. I don\u2019t want to steal a mic from anybody \u2013 we\u2019re all going to have a lot of time to share stories, I promise you. But let\u2019s get out there, let\u2019s knock out 10.6 miles for Jake right here. Okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

Boykin\u2019s death was noted by a number of sports magazines, especially those focused on cycling. \u201cOn and off the bike,\u201d Khan-Hohensee wrote, \u201che was one of the most incredible and awe-inspiring human beings that our community has ever seen.\u201d <\/p>\n
