Live Oak, population 6,900, is the host of the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suwanneehulaween.com\/\">Suwannee Hulaween<\/a> music festival. The weekend-long event is known for its psychedelic electronic music and art installations. 20,000 attendees flock to the woods outside of town, where the festival\u2019s synthesizers echo across the Suwannee River.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--break--><a href=\"https:\/\/cpa.ds.npr.org\/wfsu\/audio\/2017\/10\/hulaween1026s_wfsu_web.mp3\" class=\"asset-audio\"><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wysiwyg-asset-image-wrapper left\" data-caption=\"Hulaween festivalgoers at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida.\" data-attribution=\"Credit Suwannee Hulaween and Silver Wrapper\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"http:\/\/mediad.publicbroadcasting.net\/p\/wfsu\/files\/styles\/card_280\/public\/201710\/hulaween_lips_via_suw._hula_and_silver_wrapper_via_twitter.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Each year attendees from across the country descend on this small North Florida town on the edge of the Suwannee River for a weekend of camping and hallucinogenic revelry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s lineup includes String Cheese Incident, Bassnectar, Run the Jewels, and Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Besides the live acts, festivalgoers can take in the <a href=\"https:\/\/burningman.org\/\">Burning Man<\/a>-inspired art installations, which include light shows, paintings, and metal and wooden sculptures, meant to transform the forest into &#8220;a vivid dream-like space that fully engages the sense&#8221;, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suwanneehulaween.com\/\">event website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"1blQfL8Ns3U\"><iframe title=\"Suwannee Hulaween | Official 2016 Aftermovie\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1blQfL8Ns3U?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Alvin Jackson heads the Suwannee County economic development office. He says there\u2019s a bit of a culture clash, but he calls the financial impact of the festival transformational.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell I think you always have mixed feelings. But I think overall it\u2019s a very good feeling. We know it brings tourists and basically the tourists are spending dollars,\u201d Jackson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jackson says local grocery stores, hotels and gas stations see the greatest impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just came through Walmart and Walmart is packed. I mean folks are purchasing blankets, tents, sleeping bags, food, beer and wine, lights. Just all different types\u2026kinds of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Jackson, Hulaween brings in an estimated $700,000 dollars a day.
