Listen here.<\/a><\/p>\nThe deadly clash between white supremacists and counter protesters in Charlottesville has rattled communities across the country.\u00a0 And at the offices of the Parks and Crump legal firm Wednesday night, a community forum grappled with what to do next.\u00a0 Miguel Hernandez, associate director of the Center for Leadership and Social Change at Florida State University, says it starts with questioning what we\u2019ve learned.<\/p>\n
\u201cI subscribe to stereotypes that have been recorded in me based on my lived experience that I must take time to examine,\u201d Hernandez says.\u00a0 \u201cThose stereotypes become prejudice because I assign meaning to those feelings and those thoughts and those messages, right?\u00a0 Those incomplete stories.\u201d<\/p>\n
He says those prejudices become discrimination through actions and choices.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe really have to self-reflect,\u201d Hernandez says.\u00a0 \u201cWe have to figure out what have we been taught, why were taught those things, and do we still subscribe to those things?\u00a0 Beyond that I think investing in relationship is very, very important.\u201d<\/p>\n
Melanie Annis from the Jewish organization Hillel at Florida State University says later this year her organization is helping to bring those messages to local schools.\u00a0 It\u2019s a curriculum called No Place for Hate, and it\u2019s used for kindergarten all the way up through high school.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of them are as simple as, [as] I said, putting your thumbprint on an index card and then having that enlarged and projected and showing several thumbprints,\u201d Annis says.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHow can you actually tell whose is whose? \u00a0They\u2019re all the same and yet they\u2019re all unique.\u201d<\/p>\n
When it comes to whether Charlottesville could happen in Tallahassee, State Attorney Jack Campbell is blunt\u2014he says it can happen anywhere.\u00a0 And that puts him in a difficult position.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe might not agree with what you\u2019re saying,\u201d Campbell says, \u201cbut we\u2019ll guarantee your right to say it as long as you conform and keep public safety, but it\u2019s no longer free speech when people are dying.\u201d<\/p>\n
Campbell believes local law enforcement is well-equipped to handle a heated protest\u2014he points out the 85,000 spectators at football games can be pretty rowdy.\u00a0 But he says the best deterrent is probably communication\u2014not just speaking to one another, but listening.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":37,"featured_media":17932,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"tdm_status":"","tdm_grid_status":"","wds_primary_category":0},"categories":[136],"tags":[1137,1571,1560],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
