{"id":19691,"date":"2024-02-20T18:17:28","date_gmt":"2024-02-20T23:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/?post_type=wfsu-news&#038;p=19691"},"modified":"2024-02-21T16:41:06","modified_gmt":"2024-02-21T21:41:06","slug":"get-over-left-lane-drivers-could-face-hefty-fines-under-a-new-florida-bill","status":"publish","type":"wfsu-news","link":"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wfsu-news\/get-over-left-lane-drivers-could-face-hefty-fines-under-a-new-florida-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Get over&#8217;: Left-lane drivers could face hefty fines under a new Florida bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Florida House passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2024\/317\/Analyses\/h0317d.ISC.PDF\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a bill<\/a> last Thursday that cracks down on left-lane drivers on major highways and interstates.<\/p>\n<p>House Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myfloridahouse.gov\/Sections\/Representatives\/details.aspx?MemberId=4785\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jenna Persons-Mulicka<\/a>, R-Fort Myers, is behind the plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not only a cause of frustration for us, but it creates a dangerous situation,&#8221; Persons-Mulicka said. It creates a situation of less predictability, more encounters, more maneuvers, more opportunities for accidents, and more opportunities for increased road rage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HB 317 applies to roads with two or more lanes that have a posted speed limit of 65 miles per hour or higher. Violators could face a statutory base fine of $60, but with additional fees and surcharges, the total penalty may be up to $158.<\/p>\n<p>Exceptions will be made for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emergency vehicles or drivers attempting to pass another vehicle.<\/li>\n<li>Drivers overtaking and passing another vehicle<\/li>\n<li>When preparing to exit the road, street, or highway<\/li>\n<li>When otherwise directed by an official traffic control device. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A similar bill (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2024\/258\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SB 258<\/a>) is scheduled to come up in the full Senate later this week.
