{"id":20007,"date":"2024-05-07T18:03:25","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T22:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/?post_type=wfsu-news&#038;p=20007"},"modified":"2024-05-07T18:41:36","modified_gmt":"2024-05-07T22:41:36","slug":"hb-341-floridas-new-law-could-bring-awareness-to-drivers-with-disabilities","status":"publish","type":"wfsu-news","link":"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wfsu-news\/hb-341-floridas-new-law-could-bring-awareness-to-drivers-with-disabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"HB 341: Florida&#8217;s new law could bring awareness to drivers with disabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new law (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2024\/341#:~:text=Designation%20of%20a%20Diagnosis%20on%20Motor%20Vehicle%20Registrations%3B%20Requires%20language,with%2C%20specified%20disabilities%20or%20disorders%3B\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HB 341<\/a>) signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis lets people voluntarily indicate on their driving record whether they have a disability.<\/p>\n<p>Its called the Safeguarding American Families Everywhere (SAFE) Act, and it will be part of the state&#8217;s motor vehicle registration process.<\/p>\n<p>Tallahassee Democratic Representative Allison Tant sponsored the measure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s someone in the vehicle who may not respond to commands or request by those officers, in the way they\u2019re accustomed to,&#8221; Tant said during a House Infrastructure Strategies Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers with disabilities will be recognized in the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) system with the word \u201cSAFE,&#8221; though that could be removed at any time.<\/p>\n<p>The provision covers parents in Florida whose child has been diagnosed with a disability or disorder. Advocates say Florida&#8217;s new SAFE initiative will make officers more aware of medical conditions during routine traffic stops.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"Enh\" data-align-center>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Proud of the work, we did this year to create the SAFE act that will allow family members to register the word \u201csafe\u201d on license plates as a tool in the toolbox to help prevent tragedies like this one,&#8221; the bill&#8217;s co-sponsor, state Rep. Michelle Salzman posted on X.<\/p>\n<p>The application form for motor vehicle registration must allow an applicant to indicate any of the following disabilities or disorders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>autism<\/li>\n<li>attention deficit hyperactivity disorder<\/li>\n<li>down syndrome<\/li>\n<li>Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<li>traumatic brain injury<\/li>\n<li>PTSD<\/li>\n<li>diabetes<\/li>\n<li>autoimmune disorder<\/li>\n<li>deafness\/blindness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The law goes into effect on Oct. 1.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"fullattribution\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google-analytics.com\/__utm.gif?utmac=UA-5828686-4&amp;utmdt=HB+341%3A+Florida%27s+new+law+could+bring+awareness+to+drivers+with+disabilities+&amp;utme=8(APIKey)9(MDA4MzU1MzUzMDEzMTkyMzAwMzY5MjY1Mw004)\" \/><\/div>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":20008,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"tdm_status":"","tdm_grid_status":"","wds_primary_category":0},"categories":[],"tags":[1136,1135],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.3 -
