Dean Gioia is a Tallahassee landscape painter who makes amazing use of lighting in his works. He says his one-man show at the Tallahassee State College Fine Art Gallery opens October 1st.<\/p>\n
“Well, there are 32 paintings and it’s a little bit of everything that I think I do well. And it starts with canopy roads, then the marshes of St. Marks, landmarks like Posey’s and Outz’s. Several paintings of coastal fishermen back in the day when they used nets. And there are a lot of creeks and rivers and familiar landscapes with sunlight and illumination of our region.”<\/p>\n
Gioia said he’ll be at the October 1st show opening to speak about his work. The exhibit, entitled “Visiting Light,” runs through October 9th. He expected much of the discussion will involve the techniques he uses to make it seem the light is somehow originating from within the subject matter itself.<\/p>\n
“That’s the way the world looks to me. It looks atmospheric, spiritual, and like there’s something beneath the visual that you’re seeing. And it’s always been important to me to find a way, technically with paint, to make that happen on the surface of the canvas.” <\/p>\n
