So far this year, there have been 20 shootings in Tallahassee. From those, 7 people have died and 15 were injured. That’s a slight reduction from the numbers last year at this time. But those who commit gun violence in Tallahassee continue to find unlocked vehicles the easiest source of firearms.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had over 1,000 guns stolen from vehicles since 2021. And over 90% of those guns were left in unlocked vehicles.”<\/p>\n

Deputy Tallahassee Police Chief Maurice Holmes was among the speakers on Friday, April 17 at an anti-gun violence event at the Piggly-Wiggly shopping center on South Adams Street. Shonda Knight with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office said more “law-abiding gun owners” have a big part to play in halting the easy availability of firearms.<\/p>\n

“We have to be responsible. If you’re going to be responsible enough to purchase a weapon and do it the right way, you have to secure it the right way. Take it out of your vehicle and lock your vehicle at night.”<\/p>\n

Other offerings at Friday’s Tallahassee Urban League event included booths for voter registration, health screenings and a Croc footwear giveaway. <\/p>\n
