Soul musician Lamont Landers has been singing since he was 19. Vertical videos of him performing famous songs remixed into soul style from his home has helped him amass hundreds of thousands of followers on TikTok<\/a> and Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But people online have taken to his comments, claiming he’s lip syncing with an AI-generated voice. He’s dispelled those by posting acapella clips and showing his production process to his followers.<\/p>\n

“In a way, it’s about as flattering as it can be,” he said. “In a way, they’re saying you’re so good that I cannot believe that you, the way you looks, that could come out of you.”<\/p>\n

Those comments aren’t happening in a vacuum. AI lip-syncers have emerged on those social platforms, often using AI generating music apps like Suno and Udio. Those AI companies are in the middle of lawsuits<\/a> with music companies. Some labels have reached settlements<\/a>, allowing artists to opt into having their voice, image and likeness used in AI products for compensation.<\/p>\n

When asked for his thoughts on AI-generated music, Landers said he thinks some level of it will be a permanent part of the music-creating industry. To him, music used for corporate advertisements and other corporate products is the most at risk. He doesn’t believe it will completely replace human-made music.<\/p>\n

“I think you’ll have your organic farm to table music with real artists and it’ll have the seal of approval that it was made by real humans and not touched by AI. And then you’ll have your Taco Bell music,” he said. “There’s a world for both. You know, people enjoy really fine dining, and some people enjoy Taco Bell. I enjoy Taco Bell from time to time. So, I think there’s a world where that that is a real possibility, that that those two things exist, and God help us all.”<\/p>\n

Landers is the supporting act for the Florida leg of Alabama Shakes’<\/a> tour through the end of the month. On touring with Alabama Shakes, Landers said it’s an honor because he looked up to them growing up and is from the same area of Alabama as them.<\/p>\n

“When I was coming up, there wasn’t a whole lot of stuff happening in Alabama music wise. And they were for my generation, the band that you look at and think ‘Oh, you can make it out of here and actually make it on like, a national level, a worldwide level,'” he said.<\/p>\n

Alabama Shakes and Landers are stopping in St. Augustine, Tallahassee, Boca Raton and Clearwater through the end of the month. Their Tallahassee show is on April 26th at the Adderley Amphitheatre at Cascades Park. <\/p>\n
