Rickards High School Teacher Alejando Zapata was in the 7<sup>th<\/sup> grade and living in Queens when the towers fell.&#160;<\/p>\n<p><!--break--><\/p>\n<p>Zapata was in school at the time of the attack and recalls seeing a giant, mountain-like cloud of smoke enveloping lower Manhattan. His school went into lockdown as students and teachers tried to figure out what was happening.<\/p>\n<p>Zapata describes the attack in a video posted on twitter by Leon County Schools.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">On <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/september11?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#september11<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RickardsHS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RickardsHS<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/teacher?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#teacher<\/a> Alejandro Zapata was a 7th grader in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/queensnewyork1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@queensnewyork1<\/a> He watched <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/wtc?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#wtc<\/a> from 4th floor window of his school. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/neverforget?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#neverforget<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/whereiwas?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#whereiwas<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/k87IuRG1FZ\">pic.twitter.com\/k87IuRG1FZ<\/a>\u2014 Leon County Schools (@LeonSchools) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeonSchools\/status\/1171711306199633920?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 11, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>&#160;<\/em>\u201cYou see buildings here. And you don\u2019t see buildings here,&#8221; Zapata says, describing the moment as &#8220;surreal.&#8221; Even now, he says, &#8220;it doesn\u2019t seem like it really happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it did, and set about massive cultural changes in the U.S., including the way Americans view their own security. 9\/11 was also the catalyst for the longest war in the country\u2019s history, one that\u2019s ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Some 6,000 people were injured and nearly 3,000 people died when the towers fell.
