{"id":7268,"date":"2020-06-21T02:05:28","date_gmt":"2020-06-21T06:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/?post_type=wfsu-news&#038;p=7268"},"modified":"2020-06-30T16:41:25","modified_gmt":"2020-06-30T20:41:25","slug":"panama-city-residents-celebrate-freedom-call-out-injustice","status":"publish","type":"wfsu-news","link":"https:\/\/wfsu.org\/local-routes\/wfsu-news\/panama-city-residents-celebrate-freedom-call-out-injustice\/","title":{"rendered":"Panama City Residents Celebrate Freedom, Call Out Injustice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of Panama City residents took a stand against racial injustice on Saturday at the town\u2019s first Juneteenth Celebration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have Black, White, Asian &#8211; everybody is mixed in here today,\u201d &#8220;DJ Big Boi&#8221; David Barnes, a local radio host and community activist, told demonstrators. \u201cToday we can make change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event began with a march along the downtown section of Harrison Avenue to McKenzie Park, where community leaders called for justice on behalf of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, along with local residents 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson and 19-year-old Eric Henley who also died in the hands of law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Black lives do matter,&#8221; Barnes told the crowd. &#8220;I&#8217;m tired of seeing us killed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Barnes says he was surprised to see so many people from the community participate in the day&#8217;s events. \u201cI was overwhelmed &#8211; almost brought to tears.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center>\n<figure class=\"Figure\">\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/npr.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/d5338ea\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/2337x3126+0+0\/resize\/880x1177!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Ff8%2F98%2F7702f7844ac09fe42dec708f756b%2Fashley-gray.jpg\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"Ashley Gray.jpg\"> <\/p>\n<div class=\"Figure-content\">\n<div class=\"Figure-credit-container\">\n<div class=\"Figure-credit\">\n     Valerie Crowder\n    <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"Figure-caption\">\n    Ashley Gray, 26, poses with her sign at Panama City&#8217;s first Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 20, 2020.<br \/>\n   <\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Juneteenth marks the liberation of the last remaining people who were enslaved in the U.S. on June 19, 1865. The date is an official holiday in Florida. But Barnes says many local residents remain unaware of its historical significance. \u201cA lot of people don\u2019t know about it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe definitely have to correct and educate people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, protesters gathered at the site of the now-demolished Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, which the city plans to eventually rebuild. Some of the demonstrators&#8217; signs read: \u201cBlack Lives Matter,\u201d \u201cRacism has Bullied its LAST Generation!\u201d and \u201cJustice for George Floyd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event&#8217;s organizers called on residents to register to vote, especially those who have felony records and until recently were disenfranchised. Some leaders also spoke about the need for more police oversight, including equipping all local officers with body cameras.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to bridge that gap between law enforcement and community,\u201d Barnes said. \u201cWe have to have that conversation. We have to sit down. Sometimes we have to have uncomfortable conversations. I slowly see change. It\u2019s happening, slowly, but surely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the afternoon\u2019s demonstration, Peaches Ridgeway stood on the sidewalk with her two young nieces, holding a sign that read, \u201cGeorge Floyd. I can\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re standing for our lives, our future, their future,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ridgeway says she didn\u2019t learn about Juneteenth in the classroom, and her nieces aren\u2019t taught about the holiday in school. \u201cComing from a community where we didn\u2019t learn a lot about Black people, Black things, Black history &#8211; it\u2019s just better to be out here and to teach them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last few weeks, there have been more local conversations about race. \u201cWe organized the law enforcement community to stand against this,\u201d said Tony Bostick, vice president of the Northwest Florida Minority Business Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, he says about 70 local pastors signed an agreement on Thursday, condemning racism.<\/p>\n<p>Bostick says new leadership in local government is bringing about positive change. \u201cOur people and our community were never engaged,\u201d he said. \u201cThe city of Panama City is now under new management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both City Manager Mark McQueen and Mayor Greg Brudnicki attended the march to show their support.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers say they\u2019re planning a larger festival to celebrate Juneteenth next year.
