A benefit concert Saturday night attracted a crowd for the Spirit of a Child Foundation, which helps local families recover after trauma. It was the Rockin’ with Spirit concert at Goodwood Museum & Gardens, powering the Spirit of a Child Foundation’s main fund-raising event.

Kristie Larson, the nonprofit’s event coordinator, says they provide services for families that otherwise couldn’t get them … “whether it be for lack of money or no insurance, things like that,” she said. “And the services we provide, like therapeutic services that are helping families going through trauma or something that has divided the family, and our efforts are to get the families back together — that could be counseling, not only for the kids but for the parents, too, because the whole idea is to bring them together.”

Larson says animal therapy has come into their work.

“We have also introduced equine therapy that helps children. It could be emotional needs, it could be physical needs, it could be PTSD needs,” she said. “So we have adopted a horse that is open to anybody that chooses to participate with us and we’re getting ready to adopt a second horse by the end of this year.”

The Spirit of a Child Foundation began in 2005 and works primarily through referrals.
