St. Marks residents will soon see their water and sewage bills go up

The City of St. Marks needs more money to keep up with costly maintenance and repairs, so commissioners are increasing water and sewer fees by 75%.

The City’s Manager Zoe Mansfield says commissioners approved the increase at a recent board meeting after the city struggled to repair the city’s sewer system.

“The aging sewer system is costing us a great deal of money for the city,” said Mansfield. “Inflation [has made] parts more expensive, so we had to raise the utilities to cover the cost.”

Although the rate hike will not impact garbage and electricity costs, the decision will affect nearly 400 St. Mark residents.

“No one is really super unhappy,” said Mansfield. They [residents] seem to be working with the commission and working with the city.

Residents can expect to see the added charges on their next monthly utility bill.
