Tallahassee’s Young Actors Theatre is staging live performances of “The Little Mermaid” through November 16th. This Saturday’s matinee showing is custom-made for folks on the autism spectrum.
Young Actors’ CEO Sarah Doolin Roy says it all began in the summer when Young Actors was invited to send some performers to a New York benefit on Broadway for the Arts for Autism group.
“We applied for the community access grant as part of Arts for Autism and we were awarded a maximum award, which is $5,000.”
That grant, she says, helped stage this Saturday afternoon’s special show of “The Little Mermaid.” The intensity of the condensed performance is ramped down to avoid sensory overload, making it a treat everyone can enjoy.
“It’s just an opportunity for families to come, feel welcome and enjoy the art of storytelling through live performance.”
The 1 p.m. matinee is also a “pay-what-you want” situation.
