he local American Legion post held a flag-burning ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 22. The ceremony is considered an honorable retirement for flags that are worn, torn or discolored.
American Legion Sauls-Bridges Post 13 Commander Dennis Hall says there are three ways to dispose of an unserviceable flag: One, take the flag to a community disposal box, like the one at the post.
“We have one at our post at Lake Ella, and almost every day, someone drops off a flag or flags to be disposed.”
Two, bury the flag in a wooden box, and have a moment of silence after the burial. Or three, have a flag-burning ceremony in which the flag is completely burned. As the flag begins to burn, salute the flag, say the Pledge of Allegiance and bury the ashes. Which is what took place on Saturday.
“Let these faded flags of our country be retired and destroyed with respect and honor that they have earned. Sergeant-at-arms, escort the flag detail bearing the flags and destroy them by burning…”
