America is in the midst of a year-long series of celebrations for the country’s 250th anniversary. These celebrations are taking a variety of forms, including a local walk through historical fashion.
- The state rolled out a themed golf trail, a tribute to Florida’s status as the “14th Colony” during the Revolutionary War. It features historic courses across the state that are flying commemorative America 250 flags on the 14th hole.
- Patriotic mermaid shows were offered at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. The shows integrated patriotic routines and historical storytelling into the park’s legendary underwater mermaid performances.
- The Wheels & Wings America 250 Car Show is coming up at the Air Force Armament Museum near Eglin Air Force Base. The show combines classic American automotive history with military aerospace displays.
- Statues of Founding Fathers or American presidents have been going up statewide in counties matching their names – like Benjamin Franklin in Franklin County. Last week, Gov. Ron DeSantis hosted the unveiling of Lady Columbia in Columbia County
An entertaining and unique celebration closer to home happens September 12th from 2 p.m. till 5 p.m. “Threads Through Time” is hosted by the Wakulla County Historical Society as a tribute to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
This event is the focus of today’s Speaking Of, featuring Tom Flanigan with a roundtable of guests.
Organizers say the event looks at fashion through the decades in Florida.
Theater With a Mission will provide costumes for the Spanish Mission era plus and the short, 20-year British one. The second Spanish period, after the American Revolution when the British agreed to retrocede Florida to Spain, will have costumes of indigenous Creek and Miccosukee people living here at that time.
Costumes will also be worn by people representing women at the First Capitol, which has been reconstructed at Tallahassee’s Cascades Park. Goodwood Museum and Gardens will provide dresses of the 1920s and 1950s periods.
“Threads Through Time” is an afternoon tea and fashion show with local people presenting the fashions of the different periods. It will be held at the Crawfordville Women’s Club at 64 Ochlockonee St. Tickets are $25.
