A favorite treat from the Tallahassee of many years ago was again enjoyed by visitors to the city’s Downtown Market on Saturday.. The long-lost recipe was a staple at the old Mutt and Jeff’s Drive-In at the corner of Meridian Road and Seventh Avenue.

Drew McLeod, the Tallahassee restauranteur whose Paradise Grille rose on the old Mutt and Jeff’s site in the 1990s, said the love for the original eatery has never waned.

“I think people just have such fond memories of their experiences at Mutt and Jeff’s, whether it was the cherry cokes, or the smashes or the chicken and burgers or the dogs,” he said.

McLeod was able to obtain the secret recipe for those legendary slaw dog, “but it is a different type of hot dog than most people are used to.”

He says the new version features a barbeque sauce that, “cooked down and it’s hard to source the material. So I’ve been fortunate enough to find those and bring it back to life.”

McLeod, who now owns the Savour Restaurant on Park Avenue, cooked up more than 100 Mutt and Jeff-style slaw dogs for visitors to the Downtown Market on Saturday.
