What were six graffiti-stained traffic control boxes in Tallahassee are now true works of art. The “Art of the Box” project was a joint effort of the Knight Creative Communities Institute and the City of Tallahassee.
KCCI Executive Director Betsy Couch said there’s a very practical aspect to the project.
“When you put more art work out into public spaces, it’s really a graffiti deterrent, which is wonderful. And that really saves our community money because it’s less that you’re having to spend to go out and wipe off all the graffiti downtown.”
But it’s also a valuable exhibit space for local artists. Which Couch explained will be expanded via ICCI’s next Community Catalyst effort.
“There are so many other great things we can do to take blank canvasses and things like traffic conrtrol boxes and really turn them into these wonderful pieces of outdoor art and use it as a way to showacase all our local talent in Leon County.”
The website: www.artofthebox.org shows the art now adorning the 6 traffic control boxes around town. The participating artists on the project were: Christopher Barnhart, Powell Kay Kreis, Mary Liz Tippin-Moody, Nipa Eason, Walter Thorner, and Perdita Ross.
