The Jack McLean Community Center on Tallahassee’s South Side was turned into a medical checkup site on Saturday, Aug. 13. The idea was to help people receive the important health screenings they may have avoided during the pandemic.
The event featured several local providers, such as the Bond Community Health Center and Bethel A.M.E. Mobile Health Unit along with the sponsoring entity Quest Diagnostics where John Toye is an executive.
“Our whole purpose is to come out to the community. We want everybody to know what their vitals are so you can take control of your own life,” Toye explained.
Also on hand to reinforce the message – and getting more than a little attention from the estimated 700 attendees – was former FSU and Tampa Bay Bucs running back Warrick Dunn.
“They can get testing for cancer, diabetes, cholesterol, just overall health. We just want to help have healthy families so we can have healthy communities,” he said, adding the event was the first of a series of initiatives to promote preventive medical care.
Other community organizations provided free Bar-B-Cue, haircuts and musical performances during Saturday’s outreach.
