Even as the economy improves and the pandemic recedes, food insecurity remains a stubborn problem for the Capital Region. Several volunteer efforts are underway to address the issue.
The Godby High School cafeteria was the scene of enthusiastic activity Saturday morning. It was the full return of the yearly “Full Summer” program to provide extra food for low income families while school is out. Tracy Ippolito was one of the event organizers.
“This is our 10th ‘A Full Summer’ event. We were all a little surprised at how many of our children are food insecure. And by ‘our children,’ those are the children in the Big Bend area.”
She said more than 200 volunteers prepared around 5,000 snack packs that will be distributed to the families of kids who, during the school year, are eligible for free and reduced cost lunches.
“Over the summer, when those schools are closed, these children won’t have those opportunities to get food. So these snacks we packed today are for them.”
Next month, another food collection event called “Stuff the Truck” will be happening at Tallahassee’s Good Shepherd Catholic Church under the auspices of Good News Outreach.
