One thing Tallahassee’s fast-growing northeast side doesn’t have is an abundance of public parks. Now, what were two parks on private property in the Killearn Acres area have become Leon County’s newest open-to-everyone green spaces.
Both Pimlico and Man-O’-War parks are located in County Commissioner Brian Welch’s district. He said it has long been his goal, along with that of his predecessor Bryan Desloge, to expand the county’s park footprint in the Northeast sector. In this case, the parks were already there, but just a little bit run down.
“So those parks will now have new equipment, they’ll be mowed and maintained, the entrances will be enhanced and the parking areas will be better maintained and taken care of.”
Best of all, said Leon County Parks and Recreation Director Amanda Heidecker, it’s part of an ongoing expansion of the amount of relatively undeveloped areas open to the public.
“We’re really excited that the county is able to add an additional 18 acres of parkland for all the community to enjoy.”
Leon County’s total park space, including trails and boat landings, now exceeds 3,000 acres.
