Students at Tallahassee’s Pyramid Studios were drumming up a storm on Saturday, Sept. 12. The “Grooves for Good” performances also raised funds for the facility, which serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Before an audience that filled Pyramid’s auditorium, the competitors were creating all kinds of rhythmic pulses on a large drum kit.
The whole idea came from Pyramid Program Director Xavier Hernandez, himself an accomplished drummer with a deep background in Latin percussion. He says even modest mastery of art and music skills gives the students therapeutic benefits and happier lives.
“The work here is so important, especially to this population that we serve. I think they’ve had a history of being neglected and not being given proper treatment and functional daily living activities that are fulfilling in life.”
Pyramid Studios also hosts a yearly showcase of musical and visual art creativity at The Moon.
