Although new supplies are moving into area stores, there is still a shortage of infant formula facing new parents in the Tallahassee region. But there are some alternatives to help the situation.
Chris Szorcsik with Capital Area Healthy Start said the good news is that things could have been much worse locally.
“Our local community hasn’t had as severe a supply chain issue, not as severe as some of the other locations are experiencing. But we no it’s challenging, it’s scary and uncertain for families.”
Szorcsik said there is some infant formula to be had from Second Harvest of the Big Bend, Echo, the WIC offices in Leon and Wakulla counties. There is also a local Facebook site where families can share formula availability information. But she cautioned there is also some misinformation online.
(UPDATE as of 3 p.m., June 2 – Second Harvest of the Big Bend CEO Monique Van Pelt sent an email to WFSU stating that her organization did not currently have infant formula available.)
“There are a lot of homemade recipes floating around out there right now, but they lack adequate amounts of critical nutrients for babies. The best thing really is to try and find a substitute and once again, if you’re struggling to find that substitute, talk to your doctor.”
And for parents who do find formula, Szorcsik said it should never be watered down to conserve the supply.
