Over the weekend, Tallahassee activists marked the 51st anniversary of the Stonewall Riots—an event that kicked off the LGBTQ rights movement. Tallahassee Community Action Committee President Regina Joseph likened the riots to today’s civil unrest over racism and police brutality.
“So we look at that moment to remember that yes, we’ve come far but not without the sacrifices of people who led the trans movement—like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera,” Joseph says.
Police raided the Stonewall Inn in 1969. It was one of the only places in New York open to LGBTQ people. Officers detained anyone who didn’t have three articles of clothing that matched the gender they were assigned at birth—and a fight began, which escalating into rioting.
