For nearly three decades, the Tallahassee Downtown Market has been a Saturday tradition in the Capital City between spring and fall. The popular attraction was marking its anniversary this past weekend.
The musical duo of Bill McGuire and Paul Doyle provided the soundtrack for the market’s anniversary party. Since its inception, the market has been under the oversight of Tallahassee’s Downtown Improvement Authority, which Executive Director Elizabeth Emmanuel heads.
“It means a lot to our community to be here for 29 years—the Tallahassee Downtown Market—and it means a lot to our vendors who support local. These vendors come here every Saturday morning, set up, and tear down.”
One vendor who’s been doing that nearly since the market began is Calvary, Georgia Farmer John Corker. He’s been bringing his fresh-grown produce to the Downtown Market for a quarter of a century. Selling to customers that he calls “friends.”
“I make friends every time I come to the market, and [am] making friends all the time. Folks come and they come back to see me again. And that’s what I like!”
And Farmer John, even at the sprightly age of 84, said he’s looking forward to making even more friends at the Tallahassee Downtown Market.
