Grocery stores and food banks across America are racing to pull JIF Peanut Butter from their shelves and warehouses. The response to the nationwide JIF recall is also affecting Second Harvest of the Big Bend.
Second Harvest’s Shari Hubbard said a small army of volunteers is now combing through pallets of JIF, looking for the lot numbers that indicate possible salmonella contamination.
“We want to assure everyone that we’re doing our due diligence and encourage everyone to check product in their own home. They can find the lot numbers that are questionable on the FDA’s website.”
Hubbard said it’s too early to tell how many jars Second Harvest may have to pull from its stock. But she says the recent “Peanut Butter and Jelly” fundraiser will help purchase untainted replacement products.
“A significant fund resource to purchase peanut butter to help us as we enter into this summer when we need more shelf-stable peanut butter to help the kids who are going to be out of school.”
So far, a dozen states have reported salmonella cases possibly linked to the contaminated peanut butter. Florida has no reported cases yet.
