Meet local clay artist Nancy Jefferson and learn about the kiln firing technique known as Raku. Dating back to 16th century Japan, Raku involves taking an object out of the kiln while it is red hot, around 1800 degrees Fahrenheit, and placing it in a combustible material, then smothering the flames to increase carbon around the object. The end result is a crackled glaze with dark veins of carbon or black clay where no glaze is applied.
