RiverTrek 2013 Preview: A Turbulent Year in Apalachicola

In September of 2012, the winter oyster bars of Apalachicola Bay opened to reveal a severe lack of oysters. Years of low fresh water input from the Apalachicola River had left the oysters weakened and susceptible to predators. WFSU's "In the Grass, On the Reef" was preparing to partake in RiverTrek 2012, a 105 mile kayak adventure down the river to bring awareness to the issues facing it. That trip became the first chapter in the "In the Grass..." project's coverage of the oyster fishery crisis. One year later, as we prepare for RiverTrek 2013, we look back at a turbulent year for one of our area's most important natural resources.
