American Graduate Day is September 28 from 12 noon - 7 pm ET
Despite gains made in recent years, Florida’s graduation rates remain among the lowest in the nation. A lot of work has been focused on better preparing students for graduation and on getting them ready for the workplace. Standards reform, testing, and teacher accountability receive much attention. But the solutions to our dropout crisis do not lie entirely within the traditional K-12 environment. On this year’s American Graduate Day, WFSU looks at programs from within the school system and from out in the community that invest in individual students and give them the tools they need to succeed. The approaches are as varied as the students in our schools. From getting students who have run afoul of the justice system back on track, to fostering an interest in gardening, this year’s interviewees show that there are many ways to make an American Graduate.
