The Challenger Learning Center Fogg Planetarium was open late Friday night, but it wasn’t showing the stars.
The science education facility hosted its first rave. A rave is a dance party featuring electrotonic music. The space swapped out its sky ceiling projections for the occasion, instead displaying wonky, kaleidoscopic visuals.
The rave was planned, organized and promoted by Super Cool Awesome Music Services and Grift Raves. S.C.A.M.S.’ Justin Moore came up with the idea.
“We used to do stuff at the Coke Factory because it was kind of kind of chill and easy to do stuff in there without it being like an official space,” he said.
He ran the idea by Challenger Learning Center Executive Director Alan Hanstein, who okayed the free event. It’s the first time the center has hosted a rave.
“Everything from techno to scrans to I’m doing like an experimental electronic set. Just like the more alternative, weirder side of electronic dance music,” Moore said. “It just kind of worked out. It’s kind of a test run for something we might be doing in for the Tallahassee Film Festival too.”
At least 50 people showed up for the dry event that was free to the public.
