What inspires you from WFSU Public Media? Here's this week's Voices That Inspire. I'm Duan Reese and I'm a senior at James S. Wickers High School. The Tyler Hassy chapter at the Lynx Battalion is a program that helps prepare young men to go out into the rural world and is also a scholarship opportunity for young men to help them with a tuition or other fees that they need in college. And it also helps give exposure by meeting new people to our leaders and community. While we're in Washington DC, we had a chance to visit the African American Smithsonian Museum and that's where we learned about the history of the past. Everybody of minority were being treated indifferently other than the majority who were cockatians at the time and how we progressed through time and to where we are now. It also gives me opportunities where I can go where I want to go where I can do what I want to do. I want to go to UCF to study biomedical sciences. The three people that pushed me are my grandmother, grandfather and mother. My mother is a single mom. She's been working really hard to where she started off as a paraprofessional and bond but now she's a children and families advocate for a non-profit organization called Kids Incorporated. It's like head start for younger children so she kept the families and the children get different resources they need. My grandmother, she grew up in a time during the civilized era where it wasn't really an equal opportunity. She's been an education link kind of school assistant for a long time so it's my mother. My grandfather, he grew up in a civilized era also. He went to FAMU. He graduated at the age of 16 and after that he became like a big deal for like a car salesman. So that really inspired me so it's like knowing that they started from somewhere and it became like something like really huge that helped impact other people. I'm going to be thinking about the future and how good it's going to be when I achieve at UCF. I'm Duan Reese and I'm a senior at James S. Workers High School. You're listening to voices that inspire.
Duane Reece - I'm Going to Be Thinking About the Future
Duane, a senior at Rickards High School, speaks about his experience with Tallahassee Links Battalion. He had a chance to find out about the history of minorities while on a trip with the group to Washington D.C. He looks forward to being a college student at UCF where he'd like to study biomedical sciences. He has been lucky to have found inspiration in his mother and grandparents, who were determined to succeed.
