WFSU PBS Kids Family Creative Learning Workshops
Family Creative Learning Workshops (FCL) are an exciting, new Ready To Learn (RTL) element that brings PBS KIDS programs and tools to families in an innovative, community-focused way! Part of our job as an RTL station is to test out these new projects and then provide our local formal and informal educators with the tools they need to make them their own. If any one of these series appeals to you, please reach out to us and we’ll be so thrilled to work with you and provide what you need to make it a success!

PBS Kids ScratchJR FCL Workshops

By now you’ve surely heard about PBS KIDS very own coding app, PBS Kids ScratchJR! Scratch, initially developed by a few of MIT’s big brains, is one of the leading platforms in engaging teens in the process of coding; PBS KIDS jumped on board to partner with them in creating a version that features PBS beloved television characters and settings. The app not only breaks coding down into a form suitable for the 5-8 year old range, its story-telling potential allows it to serve as a tool for learning narrative structures and practicing writing! WFSU Education has facilitated professional development trainings and week-long summer camps geared around the app, and we have spent many hours in Leon and surrounding county classrooms implementing “mini” coding camps to share the fun and learning of coding!

As part of PBS KIDS’ mission to get this “code-to-learn” app into the hands of kids from all sorts of backgrounds, the first ever Family Creative Learning Workshop series was born! Previously hosted at Apalachee and Sealey Elementary schools, as well as at Lynn Haven Elementary in Panama City, PBS Kids ScratchJR FCL Workshops invite families to meet weekly over the course of 4 weeks at their school. Families play together while learning to create and code! They share a dinner meal, plan their stories and animate their projects with each other each session. Every night features a “challenge” that relates to a different concept in the app, so by the final workshop, families have worked together to create some really amazing stories to share with the group!

Family standing together PBS KIDS is all about heading up new ways to use media and technology to connect people and foster conversations and relationships that expand horizons. Interacting with an iPad app as a family unit to create stories using household names from the world of Wild Kratts, Odd Squad, Peg + Cat, Arthur, and more, inevitably works to do just that!

Ruff Ruffman FCL Workshops Coming Fall of 2017
You heard it correctly-- Ruff Ruffman is coming back to WFSU with more ways to pique kids’ interest in science! With his crazy antics and playful approach to hard-core scientific principles, Ruff will guide families through problem-based learning topics such as mixtures, force and motion, and structures. Much like our PBS KIDS ScratchJR! workshops, each evening is filled with family, friends and food. Engaging videos and interactive games featuring Ruff introduce families to and reinforce the topic of the evening. Best of all, families will have ample time to discover, explore and share key principles of physical science, all while strengthening family and intellectual bonds! Stay tuned!
