Meet the Intern Kelly Diaz-Rio

September 18, 2025

Hello! My name is Kelly, and I am a graduate student studying international affairs at Florida State University. I earned my bachelor’s degree in international relations from Florida International University, where I minored in international communication and political science, as well as earned certificates in pre-law skills & professional values and Middle East & Muslim world studies. Through my academic and professional journey, I have been able to connect international affairs with community engagement and educational outreach. As an intern with WFSU Public Media this semester, I am eager to gain meaningful experience that supports my long-term goal of shaping education policies and advocating for children’s rights.

Many of my most impactful experiences have come from engaging with students, families, and educators. At the Consulate of Spain, I supported the North American Language and Culture Assistants Program (NALCAP), where I gained experience in research, coordination, and bilingual communication. Part of my work involved assisting applicants by providing program information as well as supporting events that brought together the local community. At Florida State University, I work as a graduate assistant, where I review student work, support faculty, and help maintain classroom organization. This role has been especially valuable because it has shown me firsthand the challenges students face and the difference consistent support can make in their academic success.

Beyond academics, I have been active in leadership and involvement opportunities, including my role as Vice President of the International Studies Graduate Association. I also participated in numerous study abroad experiences across Europe and the Middle East, each of which deepened my perspective and reinforced my dedication to global understanding. Outside of school, I enjoy going on long walks as well as picking up new languages such as Arabic and Russian.

Growing up, PBS KIDS played an important role in my life, with Liberty’s Kids being one of my favorite shows. It was my first introduction into the legal realm, and that early exposure fostered a lasting appreciation for civic responsibility. Alongside my Colombian heritage, which instilled in me the importance of representation, these lessons make joining WFSU especially meaningful.
