Perfect PBS Warm Weather Treats

August 20, 2024

We are experiencing the hottest days of summer! Sometimes a dip in the pool or turning the fan all the way up isn’t enough to alleviate the discomfort that comes from the summer sun. There’s just something about a cold, sweet treat that takes away the pain of blistering heat like nothing else. PBS provides parents with an array of recipes that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. Here are three unique recipes that are perfectly suited for a hot summer day.

Looking for something that’s healthy, colorful, and perfect for cooling off? Look no further than Mom Tiger’s Strawberry Banana Ice Pops, inspired by Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. With only three ingredients consisting of banana, strawberry, and orange juice, this simple recipe provides a much healthier alternative than store-bought options that are filled with added sugars. Just make sure to begin preparing these either in the morning or the night before you’re reading to enjoy them, as they take about four hours to freeze. There’s nothing worse than needing that perfect icy treat to cool off, only to find it hasn’t frozen yet!

In addition to popsicles, a cold drink is also suitable for a steamy August day. If that’s the case, A Piragua-Inspired Punch Beverage Station, inspired by Alma’s Way, would be a great addition to your recipe book. Piragua is a shaved ice treat that is popular in Puerto Rico. With this punch version of the popular dessert, children can begin to understand how other cultures have their own versions of treats they are used to.

Maybe the first two recipes were a little too simple. Making a warm weather snack can be quick and easy, or it can allow for more involvement with both the parent and child! If that’s more what you’re looking for, you can try Froyo Bites, inspired by Donkey Hodie. These delicious handheld snacks have more time mixing and preparing ingredients, with various customizable options for kids. This snack provides another healthy alternative to the ice cream and frozen yogurt available in stores.

PBS Parents has over 100 recipes available for free. Even beyond those featured today, they have snacks for different occasions like birthdays, Mother’s Day, and more.

Not only is the collection of treats versatile and delicious, but they also can help to teach children along the way! Each recipe encourages collaboration between the parent and child when making the snack, allowing for opportunities for the child to better understand the process and different ingredients. Furthermore, many of the recipes relate to different concepts that the children learn in school. All of the recipes are available here, along with other games and activities available for both parents and children.
